Wide Hole Drilling - Kimberley Diamond.
The client wished to sample an area of kimberlite pipes which ran close to the surface within its Ellendale prospect in WA. The traditional method of RC drilling with compressed air and a hammer bit did not economically deliver a significant volume of material from which to draw accurate conclusions. Additionally, the 'hammer' tended to fracture larger diamond chips known to occur within samples.
One solution was to utilise a large specialised excavating plant which involved lowering a 2.5m diameter grapple excavating tool (with operator) into the hole. This was successfully used but it was limited to a depth of 65m.
The client wanted to sample to depths of 120m and Kimberley Water was asked to provide a solution. A custom built 48" (1.22m) multi cone RC drill bit (ex sub sea drilling operation) was sourced. Connected to 255mm diameter drill pipe and utilising a mud pump (with bore water as the drilling fluid), the cuttings were brought to the surface and run through a shaker where the 'fines' (< *mm) were collected in 1 tonne bulka bags.
